Reception staff when we checked in was rude and we was told there was no space in the harbour on the 6th floor restaurant by the reception staff for my partner’s birthday so I went on the website and had to request a table and they had loads of space, then when we went for dinner and it was horrendous service we only managed to get one drink with our meal the music was so loud we could hear each other and was like a night club not a restaurant venue, the waiter took orders from other customers that where there after us it genuinely got the money ruined our stay

Departure point for Isle of Wight ferries and grand cruise liners including the Queen Mary 2, Southampton is understandably centred around its port. But even if you’re passing through, the city has more than enough to make you want to stay awhile. The Hythe Ferry from the port passes Netley, site of a ruined abbey, and ends at Hythe Pier, home to the world’s oldest pier train.
There is much older history in the city centre where the 15th-century city walls are amongst the most complete in England. Also remaining is the medieval Bargate gatehouse.
Just behind is the Bargate Shopping Centre, while high street stores in the city centre and West Quay are other Southampton shopping choices. As for entertainment, the city is well served by theatres, and Oxford Street has the best bars and restaurants. All are easily reached from the apartments, B&Bs and hotels in Southampton available on Booking.com.
There is also a surprising amount of green space in the city and its central parks are Grade II-listed. Slightly further out is Southampton Common, whose Urban Wildlife Centre is worth a visit.
If you’re flying out of Southampton Airport, don’t leave without having visited the Maritime Museum or Archaeology Museum, both detailing the history of this long-established city.
What can I say about Southampton that is fair and isn't...
What can I say about Southampton that is fair and isn't something someone from nearby Portsmouth would say? I think it's almost a 'ghost town' but one where the ghosts are probably moving out. It has no character, no style, idiotic parking, traffic control systems, very little of note apart from some very nice Tudor buildings (so it might not have had a lick of paint in a few hundred years) and a few overpriced, glossy buildings that are 'modern' (see no character, etc).
It's on the South Coast so the weather can be good but it doesn't really have a beach. The people range from the ok to rather a lot of snooty, nose in the air types. I didn't like a lot of them, some were great.
Its main trade is the port: goods coming in and people going out. I'm a person, so I'm out.

This was my second stay in Southampton and I have enjoyed it both times. There is plenty to see with the museums and galleries. The food options are very good with lots of restaurants and bars to choose from. I really liked all the parks and open spaces. Taxis are easy to get and you can also pre book which is what we did to get back and forth to the cruise terminal. We traveled in and out of Southampton airport and it is a great airport as it is small and friendly and probably nicest airport experience I have ever had.

The Pub across the road does not serve food.
The Pub across the road does not serve food. There are several places to eat roughly 1 mile away, a 15 minute walk. The Mayflower Village Pub served excellent meals and drinks. Ristorante Italiano also served very good Italian food. There is a Subway close by that is open for breakfast. We Ubered from the bus station and to the cruise terminal.

Very close to cruise terminals.
Very close to cruise terminals. Large shops like Matalan ( never seen one so large with everything you'd need). Mamas & papas. Close to many eateries like TGI Fridays/5 guys/las iguanas/ Brazilian & mexican.
The building itself is imposing, stately and elegant, many guests could be seen outside taking pictures of the hotel soon after arrival. We had a beautiful spacious room looking out over the gardens at the rear of the hotel. Simple but very elegant and very comfortable. The grounds outside were exceptionally photogenic at the time we were there at the beginning of May. The location is within 30mins of Southampton and 30mins from the New Forest so travel to both is very easy.
The breakfast was superb - apart form the re-hydrated Scrambled egg. Everything was beautifully presented and the food area was spotlessly clean. Great selection of tasty foods. Something for everyone.
The lighting in the room / bathroom was lovely.
The communal social areas were fabulous.
pillows were super comfy
Plenty of sockets and charging spaces around the hotel.
Nice touch with the welcome drink.
The hotel is very impressive, set in the heart of the docklands area of Southampton. The staff were excellent and so friendly. Nothing was a problem to them. I had dinner with colleagues in the more casual dining area on the 6th floor beside the bar. The food was good, and the bar was very cosy with a chilled vibe. They had a great selection of spirits, an extensive drinks menu, and a lovely cocktail list.
Hotel was booked prior to a cruise originating in Southampton. The hotel is good , staff very helpful and friendly . Many attractions like parks and museums within walking distance and the hotel enjoys being within close reach of the cruise terminals but far enough away to allow the city to be enjoyed.
We booked this room in February (for a September stay) as the boat show was in town and we had a hard time finding a room. Location was good. Restaurant downstairs was extremely helpful allowing us to stash luggage. We had dinner down there as well and the food was exceptional.
Having previously lived in Southampton, I was always keen to stay at this boutique hotel in the centre of town.
The location is excellent, and the look and feel of the hotel is very cosy and comfortable.
Couldn't fault the facilities, the service or the quality of the food.
Star Hotel is well situated close to Mayflower Cruise Terminal and shopping centre's. Lady serving breakfast was extremely cheerful and made our day. Numerous Pubs nearby, as are shops and parks. Historic town is interesting for first time visitors
The room and the breakfast buffet were great. Good and spacious room and good quality and varieties of food. I was pleasantly surprised with some sweet snack and drinks left in the room, courtesy of Leonardo hotel Southampton.
We like the hotel and the rooms are a really good size with a full size bathroom. Parking is plentiful although the bays are odd shaped so be aware for larger vehicles. Breakfast is buffet but can get busy so book.
Perfect as a base for us and our dog as a short stay. Good size room, water pressure in shower fantastic. Good soundproofing and black out curtains. Easy walk to centre of Southampton.
Friendly staff. Cleanliness of whole hotel. Bedroom very clean thanks to Marie. Good shower. Good choice at breakfast. Free parking.best holiday inn in Southampton.
Well placed near the central station and Southampton's town centre. Nice view of the port. It is ideal for a short staying. Hotel staff was kind and helpfull
